Family Heart Foundation Founder and CEO Katherine Wilemon took the stage to welcome everyone to the ninth annual Family Heart Global Summit. “It is such a delight to see so many old friends after so long and to see so many new faces,” she announced. “Thank you for joining us in this historic hotel where in one of the rooms FDR wrote, ‘There is nothing to fear except fear itself.’ And I hope when you leave everybody will leave emboldened to think about what you can do to bring about change. I really have great hopes for this meeting together, but it all depends on us.”
This was the first year that the Summit has been held since the mission for the Family Heart Foundation expanded to include individuals with elevated lipoprotein(a) in 2021 and so this meeting marked the first time researchers, healthcare practitioners, and individuals living with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a), have convened in person. We brought together over 250 people to “look through a wider lens” to discuss practical solutions to bridging the gaps of a broken healthcare system.
Co-chairs Dr. Keith C. Ferdinand and Dr. Gisette Reyes-Soffer took the stage and encouraged everyone to use the Family Heart Global Summit as a chance to get involved and participate. “The meeting will only be as good as you want it to be. We've set a platform for us to start conversation, but we really want to engage everyone in participating, and we have a lot of breaks in between, so we encourage you to speak to the patients, the speakers, and our keynotes, to build collaboration and see how we can come to a consensus on how to move forward,” explained Dr. Reyes-Soffer.
Then, Allison Jamison and Dr. Courtney Riley shared their family stories as members of the Family Heart Foundation Board of Directors and the overall Family Heart Community. Courtney explained,
“Even though our stories are filled with heartbreak, they are also filled with hope. And we invite you to spend the next few days getting excited, and we hope that you're motivated to help accelerate the change that is so desperately needed. Let's create a world where everyone knows about FH and Lp(a) and let's work together to save more families and more hearts.”
