To kick off the first day of the Family Heart Global Summit, we were honored to have Dr. Michael Brown and Dr. Joseph Goldstein participate in a panel discussion with the patient who led to their Nobel Prize winning research, Valerie Harrell and her mother Treva Grey.
Family Heart Pioneer Award: Getting to the Heart of the Matter – The Story Continues
The Family Heart Foundation was proud to recognize the contributions of Dr. Helen Hobbs. As a renowned researcher, Dr. Hobbs has devoted her career to the study of human biology and molecular genetics.
Session 1: 50 years of Familial Hypercholesterolemia from Untreatable to (potentially) Curable
The first session of the Family Heart Global Summit included a moving lived experience story from Family Heart Ambassador Tim Ouellette. Dr. Joshua Knowles also shared the Family Heart Foundation Progress Report.
Session 2: LDL-C Control: Moving Targets, Many Options, Limited Success
Day two of the Family Heart Global Summit started off with the lived experience of Family Heart Ambassador Ally Mast. The session continued with presentations by Dr. Keith C. Ferdinand, Dr. Heather Johnson, Dr. Clyde Yancy, and Dr. Christie Ballantyne
Session 3: Technological Innovation in Healthcare: Are We Harnessing the Potential?
This session focused on the ways we can leverage the power of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other innovative technologies to improve LDL-C management in the US. There were presentations from Dr. Khurram Nasir, Dr. Fatima Rodriguez, Dr. Nihar Desai, and Dr. Amit Khera.
Session 4: Pediatric Screening: From Personal to Policy
With a focus on the need for universal pediatric lipid screening, the fourth session of the Family Heart Global Summit began with the lived experience of Family Heart Ambassador Kate Robinson. This session included presentations from Dr. Tomáš Freiberger, Dr. Peterson, and Dr. Jonathan Flyer.
Keynote Address: From LDL-C to Lp(a) – Those Who Fail to Learn from History Are Doomed to Repeat It
Dr. Nissen’s keynote address highlighted the five moments in history the medical community failed to fight back against the public misinformation on LDL-C and statins. He warns the audience that we can not repeat the same mistakes as knowledge and treatments are emerging on Lp(a).
Session 5: Lp(a): New Science, New Treatments – Will Patients Benefit?
Session five began with the lived experience of Gail Titus. Presenters included Dr. Harpreet Bhatia, Dr. Michelle O’Donaghue, and Dr. Seth Baum.
Session 6: FH & Lp(a) as a Population Health Challenge: Implementing & Sustaining Strategies that Work
The final session of the Family Heart Global Summit began with the lived experience of Family Heart Ambassador Lisa Remshik. We heard from Dr. Martha Gulati, Dr. Benjamin Scirica, and the new Family Heart Chief Medical Officer Dr. Larry Sperling.
