Dr. Mary McGowan: New CMO at Family Heart Foundation

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mary McGowan has joined the Family Heart Foundation Team as Chief Medical Officer, effective January 2, 2020. This is Dr. McGowan’s second role with the organization. She was a founding Family Heart Foundation board member and our first Chief Medical Officer in 2011 back when every role in the organization was filled by dedicated volunteers. She was critical in our initial fundraising and adeptly guided the selection of our scientific advisory board.

Dr. McGowan’s deep appreciation for the FH community and commitment to addressing familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) make her a great addition to the team. She brings her unique skills cultivating innovative and productive collaborations with health systems, public health and government agencies, as well as private foundations and businesses that support identifying and caring for individuals with FH and inherited heart disease.

Dr. McGowan received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts and remained at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center for both her internship and residency, completing her fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is the co-director of the Lipid Clinic at Dartmouth Hitchcock Heart and Vascular Center, and has authored numerous articles and five books. Dr. McGowan has been the principal investigator on over 30 national and international clinical trials and has lectured widely on the topic of cholesterol metabolism in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. She serves on the alumni board at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and the National Lipid Association Foundation Board. She previously served on the National Lipid Association board of directors and the New Hampshire Affiliate of the American Heart Association board.

She will be working out of both our Pasadena office and New Hampshire, where she resides with her husband. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Mary McGowan!
